Stage Machine Design Competition

The Stage Machine Design Competition (SMDC) is an annual design competition hosted by the Fusion Studio for  Entertainment and Engineering that brings together students who are interested in entertainment machine design in a friendly competition. I have participated twice during my time at Purdue University, with my team winning Best Overall Design in 2021.

Over the course of 4 months, my three teammates and I designed, built, and presented a machine with specific parameters. Along with the prototype, we had to provide a Design Document which included our Design Proposal, parts and cost list, user instructions, safety protocol, technical drawings, and future improvements.

2021 Competition

Winner of Best Overall Design, Best Proposal, Best Design Document, and Most Effective Design

The 2021 challenge was to a single trigger pop-up dart trap that lifted 18 inches in 2 seconds or less, fired a dart between 5 and 10 feet, and lowered in 10 seconds or more.

Winner of Best Proposal

The 2019 challenge was to design a petal drop that dropped flower petals for 30 second continuously from 15 feet above the ground. The petals had to land in a 3 feet diameter circle and the machine had to be reloadable from the ground.
